Residents eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit in Summit County can begin making appointments for free filing assistance.

Officials this week kicked off the program by reminding eligible people they could qualify for up to $5,891 in a tax refund.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax benefit available to working families earning low to moderate incomes. When filing a 2012 income tax return, you may qualify for an additional cash refund, known as EITC. Receiving the ETIC does not affect eligibility for other benefits such as food stamps, housing or Supplemental Social Security.

Refunds can be received in as little as 14 days with direct deposit.

Eligibility requirements for 2012 taxes are:

• Families with three or more qualifying children who earned less than $45,060 in 2012 (or less than $50,270 for married filing jointly) are eligible for a credit of up to $5,891.

• Families with two qualifying children who earned less than $41,952 in 2012 (or less than $47,162 for married filing jointly) are eligible for a credit of up to $5,236.

• Families with one qualifying child who earned less than $36,920 in 2012 (or less than $42,130 for married filing jointly) are eligible for a credit of up to $3,169.

• Individuals who do not have a qualifying child, but are between the ages of 25 and 64, with earned income of less than $13,980 in 2012 (or less than $19,190 for married filing jointly) are eligible for a credit up to $475.

Appointments can now be made for free assistance with filing taxes at 866-861-6401.
