Goodyear is finally getting to use its new global headquarters in East Akron.
About 200 people from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co’s information technology and finance departments started work Monday in the new, multistory building on Innovation Way. Their office belongings were packed and moved from the Akron tire maker’s old East Market Street headquarters over the weekend.
The employees started Monday by unpacking boxes and getting acclimated to their new surroundings, the company said.
Employees will be moved in phases to the new headquarters through the end of March, Goodyear said. Most of the larger moves will involve employees having their offices packed on a Friday, their belongings moved over the weekend and them reporting to work Monday at the new building.
About 1,800 people eventually will be working in the new headquarters. The building is now connected via walkway to Goodyear’s Innovation Center, where the company performs design and development work.
Goodyear’s East Market Street headquarters and Goodyear Hall will be redeveloped into new offices, retail space, restaurants and apartments.
The new headquarters cost approximately $120 million.
