BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, OHIO: Leaders in a Northeast Ohio city are nearing a decision on whether to place a drilling ban question on the Nov. 6 ballot.

The Broadview Heights City Council votes Tuesday on the fate of a proposed city charter amendment prohibiting future drilling as part of a Community Bill of Rights. The amendment would also state that city residents have a right to clean air, clean water, clean soil and a sustainable energy future.

Mothers Against Drilling in our Neighborhoods, a concerned citizens’ group, circulated petitions this summer that contained 1,519 valid signatures, meeting thresholds laid out in the city charter and Ohio law.

Drilling has been pervasive in the suburban Cleveland community with 90 active oil and gas wells contained in its 13 square miles.
