An Akron foot and ankle surgeon is making strides to educate the public about podiatry and advocate for foot and ankle surgeons on a national level.
Dr. Jordan P. Grossman recently was named president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
Grossman, 45, is a foot and ankle surgeon with Northeast Ohio Orthopaedic Associates at Akron General Medical Center. He is board-certified in foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
Grossman had been serving as president-elect of the professional association for a year before stepping into the presidency at the annual Scientific Conference last month.
The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons has more than 6,800 members nationwide.
In his new role, Grossman said he will chair the group’s board of directors’ meetings and make sure “their voices are heard.”
The group will be following several major issues in the coming year, he said, especially a movement in California for doctors with degrees in medicine, osteopathy and podiatry to earn a common license.
“That would be a quantum leap for the profession as far as our goal of gaining professional parity,” he said.
According to the association, foot and ankle surgeons complete a four-year curriculum at an accredited podiatric medical school to earn a doctor of podiatric medicine degree.
The surgeons then must finish a residency that typically lasts three years and focuses on the foot and ankle. Afterward, fellowship training is available for specific areas of foot and ankle surgery.
The organization also plans to help its members understand industry changes that are coming under federal health-care reform, Grossman said.
Grossman earned his podiatric medical degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland. He completed a podiatric surgical residency at the Podiatry Hospital of Pittsburgh and fellowships at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh and the University of Ulm in Germany.
