Summit County’s jobless rate popped up to 8 percent in January, well above the 6.2 percent rate recorded in December, according to figures released this morning.
The county rate for January 2012 was 8.5 percent.
Akron’s unemployment rate in January rose to 8.7 percent from 6.8 percent in January. The city’s rate was 9.3 percent a year earlier.
Cuyahoga Falls had a jobless rate of 7.7 percent in January, up from 5.9 percent in December. The rate was 8.1 percent a year earlier.
Jobless rates rose in all 88 Ohio counties, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
Ohio had a comparable jobless rate of 8.4 percent in January.
The unemployment rates were not adjusted to take into account seasonal factors.
Mercer County had the state’s lowest jobless rate at 5.3 percent while Pike County had the highest rate, 15.3 percent.
Elsewhere in Northeast Ohio:
• Cuyahoga County had a jobless rate of 8.3 percent, up from 6.6 percent in January and above the 7.9 percent figure from January 2012.
• Medina County’s unemployment rate rose to 7.5 percent in January from 5.6 percent in December; the rate was 7.2 percent a year ago.
• Portage County’s unemployment rate hit 8.1 percent in January, up from 6.2 percent in December; the rate was 8.4 percent a year ago.
• Stark County’s jobless rate rose to 8.7 percent in January from 6.7 percent in December. A year ago the rate was 8.9 percent. Canton’s unemployment rate jumped to 9.8 percent in January from 7.6 percent in December; the rate was 10.3 percent a year ago.
• Wayne County had an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent, up from 5.5 percent in December and down from 7.7 percent in January 2012.
The state unemployment rate for February will be released March 22, followed by county and city jobless rates on March 26.
