The Shugert 1-1H well is the No. 1 producing Utica shale well in Ohio, based on numbers released Tuesday by the Oklahoma energy company.

The well in Belmont County in eastern Ohio is believed to be the No. 1 producing well in the Utica shale in Ohio and surrounding states, reports the Pennsylvania-based Marcellus Drilling News that covers Utica and Marcellus shale developments.

The well in Kirkwood Township tested at an initial rate of 20 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, plus an initial 144 barrels of condensate per day and 2,002 barrels per day of natural-gas liquids.

The peak production rate was 4,913 barrels of oil equivalents per day, the company said.

Those production results assume full ethane recovery and what is called a natural gas shrink of 17 percent.

The company said the Shugert well is expected to go into full production in early December.

The Shugert well was recently brought online from its resting period that followed drilling the horizontal well.

In August, Gulfport had reported big success at its Wagner well in Ohio’s Harrison County.

That well is producing 17.1 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, plus 432 barrels of oil and 1,881 barrels of natural gas liquids, the company said.

That daily production makes the well one of the strongest the company has ever drilled, Gulfport CEO James Palm said.

Gulfport’s Wagner well surpassed Chesapeake Energy’s much-publicized Buell well in Harrison County that had been the No. 1 well in Ohio.

The Buell well is producing 9.5 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, plus 1,425 barrels per day of natural gas liquids.

That is equal to about 3,012 barrels of oil-equivalent per day.

The typical nonhorizontal well in Ohio produces about 50,000 cubic feet of gas per day and less than 1 barrel of oil. Such a well produces between 100 and 150 barrels of oil equivalents per day.

Gulfport has permits for 14 wells in eastern Ohio.

The company said in August that it intends to drill 200 wells in Ohio in the next four years. Fifty sites have been identified, the firm said.

It expects to begin production in mid-November on another Harrison County well: the Boy Scout 1-33H in Nottingham Township.
