Isidore C. Myers, the last of the brothers who created Myers Industries Inc. in Akron, died Monday in Newport Beach, Calif., at 96.

The family said he had been ill a short time.

Myers, along with brothers Meyer and Louis, created a used tire and related business in the late 1930s that was called Myers Tire Supply Co.

The business eventually became Myers Industries, a publicly traded company still based in Akron.

The Myers brothers’ father immigrated to the United States from Poland in 1908. The family lived in New York City before moving to Akron in 1919.

The family said Isidore Myers, born in 1916, sold newspapers in Akron at age 6.

Isidore Myers graduated from the University of Akron in 1939 with a business degree. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the U.S. and Europe.

He was married to Penny Weiner in New York in 1946. The couple were married 56 years until Penny’s death in 2003.

The family said Isidore Myers started the business unit called Akro-Mils Corp. The “M” and “I” and “L” letters in the company name represented the three brothers — Meyer, Isidore and Louis.

Akro-Mils manufactured storage products made of plastic.

In 1971, Isidore Myers was executive vice president, secretary and a director of the company. He decided to sell his interest and in 1973, moved his family to Southern California. At age 56, the family said he started a career in industrial real estate, forming I.C. Myers Properties Inc. that is now known as Myers-Erickson Properties Inc.

In a company statement at the time of the move, Isidore Myers said, “I believe there are unlimited opportunities to improve the quality of life and also serve yourself through business geared to the basic needs of people, like better housing, products to improve the environment and products to make life more rewarding.”

In 1992, the family said Myers self-published a book titled Remember: A Book To Honor The Family I Never Knew. The book covered stories about Myers’ extended family that remained in Poland and became victims of the Holocaust.

Myers was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers and sister Goldie Singer. He is survived by two sons, their wives, five grandchildren and others.

Funeral services were held Thursday at Temple Bat Yahm in Newport Beach. The family said memorials could be made to Save Our Youth, 661 Hamilton St., Costa Mesa, CA 92627 or the Isidore C. and Penny W. Myers Endowment Fund, c/o the Jewish Community Foundation of Orange County, 1 Federation Way, Suite 210, Irvine, CA 92603-0174.
