The telephone number was overwhelmed Tuesday morning for one of the credit bureaus working with victims of the city of Akron website hacking incident.
It was down temporarily but is now working again.
The number at Experian, 800-282-8081, is the accurate phone number for victims of the hacking who want to freeze their credit report for free or request a refund if they have already paid for a freeze.
Pat Henderson, Experian national consumer assistance center operations manager, said the system was down when call volume increased. That occurred after the city issued a news release Monday afternoon with information on how to get freeze fees waived or reimbursed at all three credit bureaus. The system came back up at 9:33 a.m.
The city of Akron received many calls Tuesday morning when the phone number was not working.
