CUYAHOGA FALLS: A tiny sweets store with some unusual concoctions has taken off in the city.
Sugar-Luv Homemade Candies and Confections is part of a small business area dubbed Chestnut Crossing.
It opened Nov. 30, 2011, and six months later won second place in the Favorite Desserts category on the Fox 8 Akron-Canton Hot List.
This year, Sugar-Luv took first place in the same category.
Nestled at the back of a small parking lot at 410 Chestnut Blvd., abutting the children’s resale shop Lil’ Frog Fashions, the store has become a favorite of locals, and not just because of the Hollywood Squares that remind them of lunch in the high school cafeteria.
Although the homemade salted caramels and the goodie bars are a staple, owner Shannon Campbell is always trying something new.
Recently, she expanded the store’s offerings to include craft beers to pair with her homemade truffles. It might sound strange to a beer drinker who prefers a bowl of pretzels to a cupcake, but not to Campbell.
“The philosophy of craft beer and chocolate are the same,” she said.
She explains that it’s all about the flavors.
Husband, Adam Campbell, is the beer expert, and suggests different small brewery finds to pair with Shannon Campbell’s chocolate creations.
“We want to educate people to step outside their comfort zone,” Shannon Campbell said. “The best thing about pairing is experimenting and getting people to be a little more adventurous.”
The couple has taken its beer-and-chocolate show on the road, hosting private tastings. Last week, they joined 101 Bottles of Beer on the Wall in Kent for Sweet Beer and Sweet Treats.
Today at noon, the Cuyahoga Falls Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting to celebrate Sugar-Luv’s expanded offerings.
Shannon Campbell will be offering oatmeal pies, homemade caramel sauce, cookies and cream ice box cake and craft beer and truffles.
Judging from the business’s Facebook page, rabid fans can’t wait to find out what will be unveiled next.
