Tuesday’s Engineering & Science Career Fair at the University of Akron sprawled throughout the third floor of the Student Union, with more than 150 employers participating and about 1,000 students and alumni attending.

Response from employers was so great that some had to be turned away, organizer Deanna Dunn said.

“Companies have been lean,” said Dunn, director of engineering co-op and placement. “Now with the economy beginning to get back to normal, employers have a shortage” of workers.

Dunn said many students were looking for co-op opportunities, and companies see co-op positions as an inexpensive way to try out potential full-time employees. Employers included Timken Co., the steel and bearing maker headquartered in Canton; Diebold Inc., the Green-based ATM maker; construction giant Kiewit, with main offices in Omaha, Neb.; American Renolit Corp., a plastic film manufacturer headquartered in Indiana, and Honda.

The college has about 2,900 undergraduates.
