State offers workforce training help

Businesses interested in financial help to train workforce members can apply for state help.

Money is available from the Ohio Incumbent Workforce Training Voucher Program, the Ohio Development Services Agency announced.

The program will make $30 million available with $27 million in grants awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications for the grant program will be accepted for review on Sept. 30. The state said the remaining $3 million will be used for loans.

Training programs are available in the following areas:

• Advanced manufacturing

• Aerospace and aviation

• Automotive

• Back office

• A category called “BioHealth”

• Corporate headquarters work

• Energy

• Financial services

• Food processing

• Information technology and services

• Logistics

• Polymers and chemicals

• Research and development

Training can include classes offered at accredited places as well as at an employer’s facility or third-party site, the state said.

Companies in business for at least a year are eligible.

Employers will be reimbursed for up to 50 percent of the eligible training costs, up to $4,000 per employee, after the employer pays the full cost of the training and it is completed, the Ohio Development Services Agency said.

The maximum amount an employer may qualify for in a fiscal year is $250,000, the state said.
