Summit County’s jobless rate fell to 6.2 percent in September, down from 6.5 percent in August and 8.1 percent a year ago, according to figures released Tuesday by the state.
That was Summit County’s lowest unemployment rate since September 2008, when the rate was also 6.2 percent. There were 263,900 people counted as working last month in the county and 17,400 unemployed; there were 14,900 more people at work — 278,800 — and 18,800 unemployed in September 2008.
There were 600 more people counted as working in August — 264,500 — than there were counted as working last month. On the plus side, there were 4,000 more people working in Summit County in September compared to 259,900 a year ago.
Akron’s September jobless rate was 6.9 percent, 7.4 percent in August and 9 percent a year ago. Cuyahoga Falls had an unemployment rate of 6 percent, down from 6.2 percent in August and 7.8 percent a year ago.
Unemployment rates fell in 78 of Ohio’s 88 counties. The low ranged from 3.9 percent in Mercer County to a high of 11.5 percent in Pike County.
The jobless rates do not count people who are unemployed but have stopped looking for work or who are working part time but want a full-time job.
Also in Northeast Ohio:
• Medina County’s rate was 5.4 percent, 5.7 percent in August and 6.1 percent a year ago.
• Portage County had an unemployment rate of 5.9 percent last month, down from 6 percent in August and 7.8 percent a year ago.
• Stark County’s jobless rate was 6.5 percent last month, 6.8 percent in August and 8.6 percent a year ago.
• Wayne County had an unemployment rate of 5.5 percent in September. The rate was 5.8 percent in August and 7.3 percent in September 2011.
Rates were not adjusted to take into account seasonal factors.
Ohio had a comparable unemployment rate of 6.5 percent in September; the statewide seasonally adjusted rate was 7 percent.
