Beacon hires executive
Lori Ann Carver will join the Akron Beacon Journal as vice president of advertising Feb. 3.
Carver has an extensive background in advertising. She currently is Halifax Media’s regional advertising director for the northwest Florida region, responsible for two daily newspapers and eight weekly newspapers.
She has held various advertising positions with Media General newspapers in North Carolina for the Hickory Daily Record and Winston Salem-Journal.
Carver worked for CNHI Publishing in Birmingham, Ala., and the Herald-Sun in Durham, N.C.
She has non-newspaper experience as a senior account executive for WLFL/WB22 TV in Raleigh, N.C.
Carver is a North Carolina native who graduated from Methodist College in Fayetteville.
Top volunteers sought
Home Instead Inc. is seeking nominations for its Salute to Seniors Service program, which recognizes outstanding volunteers 65 and older who must give at least 15 hours monthly to their favorite cause or community group.
State winner will receive $500 for themselves and their designated nonprofit organization.
The national winner will have $5,000 donated to their nonprofit charity.

Giant Eagle expanding
Giant Eagle is expanding to a new state. The Pittburgh-based grocer with stores in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, northern West Virginia and Maryland has announced that it will be opening two new stores in Indiana.
The grocer is building its Market District food destination store and GetGo convenience restaurant and fuel station in The Bridges development in Carmel, Ind., just outside of Indianapolis, in 2015.
The company employs approximately 36,000 in 420 retail locations.

YRC Teamsters vote Sunday
Unionized workers for Akron-area YRC Worldwide and affiliate USF Holland vote Sunday on a new contract with the Kansas-based trucking company.
Teamsters Local 24 will start sign-in and eligibility check-ins 9 a.m. at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn, 3180 W. Market St. in Fairlawn.
A meeting to review the tentative agreement with YRC starts at 10:30 a.m. Local 24 represents YRC workers in Copley and USF Holland workers in Green.
Teamsters Local 407 members who work at the trucking company’s Richfield terminals vote Sunday morning at the local’s union hall in Cleveland.
Teamsters strongly rejected a previous contract offer.
Financially struggling YRC has said if union members reject this most recent tentative agreement, the company likely will file for bankruptcy.

New program at Case
The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University will launch an executive education program March 27 for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and the companies interested in retaining them.
The Leadership Lab for Women in STEM is a six-week program designed to provide professional and leadership development for women in the technology-driven careers, which are often male-dominated.

Liquor sales
State posts higher numbers
The state says total liquor sales in Ohio climbed to a record $898 million in 2013, up almost 6 percent from the previous year.
The Ohio Division of Liquor Control says retail dollar sales were strong in 2013 totaling $635 million, an increase of more than 7 percent.
Wholesale sales of spirits to restaurants, bars and clubs increased by 2.5 percent to $264 million.
The state noted that sales grew at a higher rate than consumption.
The amount of gallons of liquor sold increased 3 percent compared with 2012.
The division sold 12 million gallons at its hundreds of contract agencies around Ohio.
The state says buyers are trading up to purchase premium brands.
The top-selling brand was Jack Daniels whiskey, followed by Kamchatka vodka and Crown Royal whiskey.
