About 300 area advertising professionals gathered Friday night at the Akron Civic Theatre downtown for the annual Akron ADDY awards, which honor the best in local work.

The Akron ADDY awards are sponsored by the Akron Chapter of the American Advertising Federation.

The big winners of the night were 427 Design of Akron, with eight awards; TRIAD/Next Level of Cuyahoga Falls, with five awards; and Kleidon & Associates of Fairlawn, WhiteSpace Creative of Akron and Kent State University, each with four awards.

Here are other results for work performed in 2013:

Judges Choice Awards — 427 Design for its 427 Design Open House VII campaign; Kron Corp. of Copley Township for a poster for the area funk-jazz-jam band called Costley Ct., after a street in Kent; TRIAD/Next Level, for a product guide for Smithers-Oasis of Kent, which makes a variety of floral foam products and other items for the floral industry.

Best of Show — Geometry Global’s Akron office for the Nokia Comic Con campaign, which also won a Gold Addy Award.

Student Best of Show — Kevin Stuhldreher and Katie Soinski, of the University of Akron, for their Myers Interactive Installation. The piece consisted of five large panels, each highlighting a topic involving a leading designer and created in the designer’s style. The project, designed to educate students — was made for UA’s Myers School of Art Annual Design Week.

The annual Akron ADDY awards are the first of the three steps in a national competition the American Advertising Federation organizes.

The Akron chapter of the advertising federation awarded its 2014 Silver Medal Award, akin to a lifetime achievement award, to Jack DeLeo, a 40-year-veteran of the advertising industry who retired in December as president and CEO of Hitchcock Fleming & Associates Inc. of Akron.

Friday night’s event was dubbed the Great ADDYs and had a Great Gatsby theme.

A full list of 2014 Akron ADDY award winners was to be posted at www.akronaddys.com.
