Carter Lumber, the chain of building materials stores, is moving its store operations in Medina County to the company’s original location on Case Avenue in east Akron.

The Akron store, at 172 N. Case Ave., is getting a new name, being rebranded as simply Carter Lumber.

The store had operated under the company’s original name of Carter-Jones Lumber.

The Carter Lumber chain was founded in Akron in 1932 and is now headquartered on Tallmadge Road in Kent.

There are no layoffs with the consolidation, the company said. All employees at the Medina operation in York Township will work out of the Akron facility. The number of employees at each store was not available.

The Medina operations were getting too big for the facility at 6407 Norwalk Road, the company said.

The move is part of a corporate strategy of consolidating smaller stores into larger facilities.

Last year, Carter Lumber said it was closing 26 stores as the building materials supplier focuses on growth in its larger markets.

Those closings included a store in Norton at 1763 Wadsworth Road. A dozen other Ohio stores outside the Akron area were closed

The Medina store will close Friday. However, much of the inventory was moved earlier this week.

Carter Lumber also is moving its Sheffield Village store into a new store three miles away in Elyria.

Carter Lumber has more than 140 stores in 12 states. Last year, it had sales of $956.3 million, according to ProSales Magazine. The company has more than 2,600 employees.

In addition to the original store on North Case, the company has stores in the Akron-Canton area at 3779 Manchester Road in Coventry Township; 38 N. Cleveland Ave. in Mogadore; 816 W. Main St. in Kent; 4929 state Route 59 in Ravenna Township; 1532 Perry Drive SW in Perry Township; 11260 Locust St. NW in Canal Fulton; 720 N. Chapel St. in Louisville, and 23611 State Route 62 in Alliance.
