Patents and intellectual property to be discussed

Akron-Summit County Public Library at 60 S. High St. in downtown Akron will offer patent, intellectual property and entrepreneurship programs in 2013.

The intellectual-property programs are:

Introduction to Intellectual Property — 6:30 p.m., Jan. 8 and March 5. Learn the differences among the various types of intellectual property and how best to protect creative work.

Introduction to Patents and Patent Searching — 10 a.m. Jan. 12 and March 9. Librarians from the science and technology division will explain the process of getting a U.S. patent and show how to do a preliminary patent search using the United States Patent & Trademark Office website.

The Frisina & Smith Entrepreneurship Series will include hourlong programs:

Entrepreneurship — 5:30 p.m. Jan. 16 and March 20. Patent attorney and SCORE business counseling volunteer Dominic Frisina will host sessions aimed at making the most of intellectual property.

Business Formations — 5:30 p.m. Jan. 16. Attorney Patricia Smith will discuss business organization options (such as sole proprietorship and partnerships) and the steps of registering a business and selecting a business name.

Business and Product Branding, 5:30 p.m. March 20. Dominic Frisina will discuss legal and practical issues in selecting a brand, including the brand’s relationship to the goods sold under it; trademark clearance and infringement issues; selecting and working with a graphic designer and establishing ownership of artwork and copyrights, and building brand awareness, advertising, websites, and social media.
